N ear the entrance to the exhibition, a medium-sized image depicts a Japanese woman in loose, sensuous clothing that parts to reveal a cheeky flash of pale leg. Other paintings leave less to the imagination; they are replete with pubic hair and sex toys and gravitationally implausible scenes of coitus. One shows a nun with a shaved head having sex with a priest who is hidden in a large bag. Another shows a group of men engaged in a "phallic competition", their gigantic, exaggerated penises resting on tables and kickstands. A third shows a woman being pleasured by two octopuses.

Now, on the basis of a new exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, he wonders if he got anything right at all. Here's Bruce with his response to Neo-Tokyo: Japanese Art Now: I think it would be a fair bet that the following cultural stereotypes about contemporary Japan still have currency in Australia - if not the entire English-speaking world: the Japanese are socially very regimented; the Japanese have a great taste for cuteness and kitsch; the Japanese adore new technology; the Japanese relish the possibilities, indeed the beauties of mass production; the Japanese are given to kinkiness in sex, cruelty in cuisine and eccentricity in humour. These stereotypes aren't necessarily demeaning or prejudicial, but nor are they wholly accurate. The moment you set foot in Japan, everything you've ever assumed about the place is revealed as both true and false. True in the most obvious, superficial ways, and not simply because you've disembarked at Narita airport.
